Match fixing on a rise in every sport today

Match fixing on a rise in every sport today

Till date fixing and corruption both are the major key factors which are destroying the uniqueness and sportsman spirit of the players. When we go back to arena of ancient Olympics in Greece, there we can find the traces of god and goddess outside the stadium, the player bore the cost of it or the coach ran the risk of being caught on the charge of indulging in cheating activity. So this thing is not a new trend in today’s sports but it is a part of sports since ancient times. And this corruption will continue till the time we will be having these competitive sports being played.

However, the 21st generation is getting bombarded with a new virus in sports i.e. match fixing .This is a complete new trend which started almost 2-3 decades back as if someone has injected some doping substance in the sports. And since it has started it is showing its effects like a virus and if we are not able to stop it as soon as possible then it will destroy the charm of many sports. And globalization is actually like a supporting leg in this phenomenon of fixing as now anyone from any part of the world can put a bet on any professional sport and this gambling is spreading like music industry.

The issue which takes everyone’s heart out is not actually doping but match fixing. In fact one of the most dominating personalities in sports, Jacques Rogge, president of International Olympic committee has said that doping affects a particular person but the threat of match fixing affects all the individuals in the competition. Also many people even suggested a name for this i.e. “cancer”. Initially football was the only sport which was affected by match fixing but now the scenario has changed.

Football is not the only sport which is now the target of match fixing worm but many other games like basketball, cricket, volleyball, snooker, horse racing, sumo wrestling, tennis etc. are in the list. But now the question arises that why people indulge in match fixing? “MONEY” is the main inducement. People are getting so blind in making money that they have totally forgotten that they are indulging in something illegal. Not even a single person will agree with the point that today, sports is spotless.

Match fixing on SPORTS

Match fixing is actually not new to the sports world but many incidents are there which shows up the traces that it used to happen earlier to. Players accepting to lose a match just because of some money have been since the Greek civilization. Media earlier played a very small role in harnessing these things but today only media is the one who takes out each scandal done in sports and telecasts it. Match fixing most probably have its roots in the illegal business or we can say illegal betting business, where people bet with large amount of money on the results of the game. Cricket being the favourite game of Indians does in fact invite some of the betters to play large money games. And all these scandals, match fixing, corruption are harming the true essence of sports and are actually proving that sports are getting just a means of making money and not making one a true sportsman.

The framework of our judiciary system is insufficient to tackle with this virus and it has to update itself like that of America, Russia and Bulgaria where being indulged in match fixing punishment is imprisonment for at least 6 years. Prestige damage to any professional sport lessens its essence and it becomes like an ordinary thing. Now again a question arises that who organizes this match fixing? An individual or a team? Who are those people who put their careers at risk for doing an illegal act? There are different categories under it starting from people running illegal betting and lasting till the players themselves. And since all these things are associated with sports management committee all the liability is taken care of by the committee.
